Your agent designs, retouches and grades, and checks its own work. You open the layers. The open-source image engine for agents: Remotion, but for Photoshop.
Filters, adjustment layers, blend modes, layer styles, masks, retouching and print output, all as non-destructive layers. Every result opens in Photoshop as a layered PSD.
Documents hold artboards. Artboards hold image, shape, text, adjustment, smart object and group layers, with masks, clipping, 27 blend modes, layer styles and smart filters. An agent reads all of it as a compact outline, the same way it reads JSON.
A patch is a list of set, insert, move and remove operations. It applies atomically: every operation lands, or none do. Each applied patch becomes a new revision, and any revision can be reverted.
#headlineOne layer, by its ID.
@backgroundLayers by role.
.hillEvery layer with a tag.
$selectionThe current selection.
story-9x16 #headlineScoped to one artboard.
The patches above are simplified to show the idea. See docs/spec-v0.1.md for the exact format.
Layers are placed with anchors, margins and percentage sizes instead of fixed pixel positions. The same document adapts from a 4:5 post to a 9:16 story without moving anything by hand.
Scrub through the revisions this poster was built in. Each one is a patch an agent sent, and the document can be reverted to any of them.
Two agents read the document at r4. Agent B patches first. When Agent A sends a patch based on r4, Gesso doesn't apply it over B's work. It returns the operations applied since r4, so A can update and try again.
Most of it stays live in Photoshop: adjustment layers, layer styles, text, shapes, and common filters as smart filters. What Photoshop can't match arrives baked into its own layer, so the file always looks the way Gesso rendered it.
In Gesso every layer stays editable. Switch to Photoshop to see what arrives live.9 of 14 layers stay live. Baked layers keep their own layer, so you can still move, mask or hide them.

Gesso 0.11.0 covers most of Photoshop's Filter, Image › Adjustments and Edit menus. Everything stays non-destructive in Gesso, and the agent zooms in, compares and measures to check each step.
The engine makes an edit possible; the bundled skills make it good. Gesso ships 30 skills that teach your agent how professionals use these tools, each with checks to run on its result. Most come with recipes: proven layer setups the agent applies in one step and then fine-tunes. All 51 recipes are tested against sample photos, with measurements, on every change to Gesso. Five of the skills cover 50 professional workflows, ten per niche.
Gesso is free under Apache-2.0. It gives any agent that speaks MCP 21 tools, 30 skills and 51 tested recipes, on macOS, Windows and Linux.
Gesso never calls or pays for an image model. It prepares the job, your agent sends it to an image tool you already have connected, such as Magnific or Higgsfield, and the result comes back into the document as a layer or mask, with a record of what made it.
Adapting a design to many sizes needs one background expand, shared by every size, so the backgrounds match across the set.
Gesso runs inside the AI tools you already use. Install it once, then ask for a design.
Install the extension. It includes everything it needs.
